Richard W. “Bill” Spencer

Richard W. “Bill” Spencer, 85, of Amarillo died Tuesday, March 29, 2016.
Celebration of life services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Paramount Baptist Church with Jim Fox officiating. Burial will follow in Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.
Bill was born April 16, 1930, in Amarillo to Tom and Georgia Spencer. He graduated from Amarillo High School in the class of 1948. Bill was an avid football enthusiast having played for the Amarillo Sandies and later for West Texas State University and Kansas University on a football scholarship. He received a degree from Dallas Institute of Mortuary Science.
Bill was a member of Southwest Football Officials Association for 38 years. He officiated in the Panhandle area, the Oklahoma Collegiate Conference and the Missouri Valley Conference. He was an umpire in the United States Football League for the years it was in existence. Bill officiated college and professional football in 42 of the 50 states.
Bill served as a trustee on the Amarillo Firemen Retirement Fund board for 26 years. He was an independent agent in the life insurance business for 50 years. After retirement, he enjoyed working for Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors for many years.
Bill married the former Dorothy Johnson, his wife of 66 years. They lived their lives to the fullest with Jesus Christ as the center of their home. He was a member of Paramount Baptist Church and served as a deacon.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Spencer, of the home; two daughters, Carolyn Jones and Charlotte Ramzel and husband Carter; a son, Dr. John Spencer and wife Darlene; eight grandchildren, Dr. Jason Jones, Jeff Jones and wife Jennifer, Newman Ramzel and wife Kiersten, Spencer Ramzel and wife Melissa, Scott Waddell and wife Delane, Blair Spencer and wife Courtney, Tiffany Handlon and husband Kris and Wesley Phelps and wife Ashley; and nine great‑grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be to Paramount Baptist Church, 3801 S. Western St., Amarillo, TX 79109.
