TASO FOOTBALL TO HONOR 2 TWO COACHES FOR HEROIC ACTION

Two days before their 2019 UIL State Championship game, Mart player Aiden Gast collapsed on the turf during practice. At first everyone thought he was experiencing some type of seizure, but when coaches Landry Williams and Shane Martin rolled Gast over they realized he was not breathing. It was not a seizure, but a heart attack.

Texas requires coaches to be certified in first aid and CRP procedures, training that paid off as Williams and Martin immediately started working on the back‑up quarterback. The coaches were able to revive him and had him breathing before the ambulance arrived.

Because of their quick actions and response under pressure, Gast was on the sideline as the Panthers rolled to a 76‑33 win for their second straight championship.

The TASO Football Board has voted to present Coach Landry Williams and Coach Shane Martin the TASO Football Dr. Bill Farney Award. The Farney Award, named after the former UIL Executive Director, is presented to honorees who have distinguished themselves through extensive service or contributions to Texas high school athletics and/or extraordinary acts of courage or humanitarianism related to Texas high school athletics.
