CORONAVIRUS AID, RELIEF, AND ECONOMIC SECURITY ACT (CARES ACT)
An initial review of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act) seems to indicate that there may be some relief for sports officials as independent contractors that are losing income in the form of game fees. There are lots of opinions circulating, but the facts are in the details of this 1,305‑page bill. Even though this is a Federal law, the implementation will be in the hands of the Texas Workforce Commission as unemployment/underemployment benefits.
The TASO legal and legislative team continue to research the potential benefits for our members and the mechanics involved to submit claims. We will keep our members updated as facts, not opinions, become available.
In the meantime, I hope and pray for the health and safety of each of you and your families.
