BOB HICKS

Bob Hicks  became a SBUA/TASO Baseball member in 1974 and served TASO until his passing on Sunday, October 12, 2025.  Bob served the San Antonio Baseball Chapter in every way possible, from Training Coordinator to Chapter President.

At the State level, Bob served as a District Director and for more that 15 years served on the TASO Membership Review Committee.

San Antonio lawyer and Churchill High School Latin teacher Robert McMurty Hicks died Sunday, October 12,2025 at age 74.

Mr. Hicks was born and raised in Amarillo. He spent his best day following his maternal grandfather, for whom he is named around endless pastures and maze fields at the ranch between Texline and Dalhart. He graduated with honors with a Bachelor of Arts in Plan II at The University of Texas at Austin in 1974. He received his Master’s in Classics from UT Austin in 1979. . During the summer of 1992 he served an internship with the Supreme Court of Texas. In 1993 he was graduated from St. Mary’s University School Law School with a juris doctorate degree. Bob was admitted to the State Bar of Texas by Justice Hightower in November of 1993.

Prior to his legal career, Bob taught Latin at Churchill High School from 1977 to 1990. His students were always a competitive group and regularly won state and national recognition in Latin knowledge competitions.

Outside of teaching Bob was recognized as the cornerstone of TASO, the Texas Association Baseball of San Antonio. For many years he served in various elected positions mostly as president. He created the training program for new umpires. The chapter has honored him as a life member. Bob loved being behind the plate calling balls and strikes. One of his most wonderful memories was during the umpire strike. He was privileged to be asked to fill in for the striking umpires of the professional minor league teams.

Bob passionately tried each case during his 30 years of practicing the criminal and juvenile law. He loved the law and made sure it was applied fairly. His prowess in the court room was acknowledged and respected by both judges and his peers. He worked many cases with juveniles and had the distinction that none of his clients went to prison. There were many a night he would be at the juvenile detention center trying to communicate with a “throw away child” so that young person would be made aware of the many programs available to him to begin the process of rehabilitation. Bob was driven to provide the best outcome for his clients.

Bob married Deborah Jean Scanlon of Cincinnati, Ohio in December 1979. They had daughters Cassandra Jean Hicks and Lauren McMurtry Hicks, and sadly, both children predeceased their father, Bob.

He is survived by his sister Sarah Faulkner (David) of Amarillo, TX, brother James Hicks (Carol) Amarillo, TX and brother Wiley Hicks III. (Pam) of Amarillo, TX

He is survived by sister‑in‑law Marita Roberson (Chuck) of Johnstown, Colorado, brother’s‑in‑law Marc Scanlon (Valerie) of Pataskala, Ohio, and Michael Scanlon (Pat) of Trenton, Georgia.
