TASO FOOTBALL RULE UPDATE
TO: TASO FOOTBALL MEMBERS
SUBJECT: UPDATES BEFORE SCRIMMAGES BEGIN
DATE: AUGUST 12, 2025
As we prepare for scrimmages in the 2025 season, it is imperative that we maintain the same level of professionalism and adherence to rules as we would during any UIL contest during the regular season.
Should any of these procedures be disregarded, we kindly request that you continue officiating the scrimmage while simultaneously completing a UIL Incident Report detailing the rules that were violated by the teams. If the violation pertains to safety concerns, it is our utmost priority to prioritize the well‑being of the participants.
With this in mind, please ensure your safety and hydration during the scrimmages. We eagerly anticipate your presence on the field.
As we begin the 2025 season with scrimmages this week, please review these items.
Helmet Visors – The NCAA has identified two visors that are “nearly clear” which will be allowed for use this year and UIL has accepted the rule change. Tinted visors are still NOT permitted and cannot be worn by participants. Tinted goggles or glasses may be worn if an approved medical exception is granted by the UIL. The newly authorized visors are:
- Oakley “Prizm Clear” model
- Nike “Vapor Speed 2.0” model
Practically speaking, the model’s name is not visible on the visor. So, if officials see a visor that they question, they can ask the coach or trainer what the model is. They can also look, and if they can see the player’s eyes, that would suggest it is one of the two approved visors. These visors may give the appearance of tint, but they are sufficiently clear to see the player’s eyes.
Guardian Caps – A reminder, the Guardian caps that fit on top of helmets are legal this year. Team caps must effectively match the team helmet color.
Sportsmanship – The UIL has communicated with all schools to remind them that sportsmanship and character‑building start now. They encouraged all UIL schools to continue these efforts starting with scrimmages. They want schools to ensure sportsmanship and sideline protocols are maintained.
Numbered Uniforms During Scrimmages & Pregame Activities – UIL has directed players must wear numbered uniforms during scrimmage play and scrimmages will be treated like a game from a uniform standpoint. No shorts will be allowed, and jersey numbers must be legal position numbers.
