Powell Scheumack
Powell Allen Scheumack, 91, passed away on March 20. He was
born in Victoria on Sept. 22, 1921, to John T. and Josephine F. Scheumack.
Powell is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Elizabeth Parker Scheumack;
children, Susan Scheumack Roberds and husband Bill; Jeffrey Allen Scheumack and
wife Kathy; and Sarah Scheumack Giles; grandchildren, Kyle Scheumack, Griff
Scheumack, Courtney Giles and Valerie Giles; along with numerous other loving
family members and friends.
He was a graduate of Victoria High School, 1939 and Texas
A&M University, 1950, where he earned his B.S. in Electrical Engineering.
He was a member of both the Professional Engineers and the Electrical and
Electronic Engineers. He retired from Dashiell Corporation at the age of 75,
after 25 years of service.
Powell proudly served his country as a member of the United
States Air Force, during WWII, as a fighter pilot. He reached the rank of major
and had a very distinguished career and was decorated for his many
accomplishments. He received the Silver Star, the Distinguished Flying Cross,
the Purple Heart, the Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, EAME (European,
African, Middle Eastern) theater ribbon with three bronze stars and the
American Theater ribbon. He completed 113 combat missions, accumulating 256
combat hours. He flew various aircraft, the P‑40, P‑39, P‑37, and P‑51 and was
a P‑51 Squadron Commander. He served twice as group leader on vital missions
and 44 times while a Squadron Commander. He was a member of the Caterpillar
Club, having made four emergency jumps.
Powell had many interests; he was a high school football
referee for 43 years, retiring at the age of 70. He was a past president of the
Houston Chapter of the Southwest Football Officials Association, 1974‑1975;
president of the State Southwest Football Officials Association, 1985‑1986;
received the Houston Chapter of the Southwest Football Officials Association
Distinguished Service Award, 1991; Curly Hays Officials Award, 1992; Honorary
Life membership to the Southwest Football Officials Association, 1992;
Distinguished Service Award from the Greater Houston Football Coaches
Association.
