Healthy Lifestyles:Getting Rid of Excess Weight in the Offseason
By Dr. Dan Davis
Excess weight is the enemy of good health and conditioning.
I’ve referred to these numbers in previous articles, but they bear repeating.
- When you walk, every step puts 1.5 times your body weight
worth of force on your feet. So, if you gained 5 pounds in your offseason, it’s
like gaining 7 to 8 pounds just while walking.
- When you jog, the factor goes up to 4 to 6 times your body
weight, and running adds an additional 6 to 8 times your body weight’s worth of
force. So, if you gained 10 pounds since your last season ended, it’s the
equivalent of gaining 60 to 80 pounds which you’ll feel when you’re trying to
run up and down a basketball court, or soccer field or any playing surface.
