OBIT

Charles Michael Peek, loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away at the age of 71 on Tuesday, June 7, 2022, surrounded by his family.
Mike, as he was known to all, was born in Commerce, Texas on September 3, 1950, to Faye and Joyce Peek. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from East Texas State University and worked at Trinity Valley Community College for 47 years, where he taught Economics and served as Student Activities Director for more than three decades. Mike was currently serving on the board for the TVCC Foundation and as President of the Athens Municipal Water Authority board.
In 1975, Mike met Beverly Cartwright, and the two married on December 10, 1977. Together, they raised two children, Meredith and Craig, and shared their life in Athens, Texas for almost 45 years.
Mike was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Athens, a valued member of his community, a beloved professor and mentor, and a loyal friend. For more than 50 years, he refereed football games at the middle school, high school, college, and professional level. He also donated his time and expertise, teaching economics to prisoners pursuing higher education.
Nothing brought a smile to Mike’s face more than spending time with his grandsons, swimming in the pool or playing a game of Old Maid together. He was always proud to be their “Misname.” Mike loved traveling with his family, especially when they spent time on the beach in Turks and Caicos. He frequently won local awards for his incredible Christmas lights and decorations, creating more extravagant displays each year. Mike will be deeply missed by his family, friends, students, and community.
Mike is survived by his wife, Beverly of Athens, Texas; 2 children and their spouses, Meredith and Jeff Davis of Keller, Texas, Craig and Mallory Peek of Fort Worth, Texas; 2 grandsons, Liam and Reece Davis; and brother, Jim Peek of Commerce, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, Faye and Joyce Peek; and nephew, Chad Sweeden.
Funeral services for Mike Peek will be held at the First Baptist Church in Athens on Sunday, June 12, 2022, at 2 p.m. with a graveside service following at Athens City Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be Saturday evening from 4‑6 p.m. at Autry’s Carroll‑Lehr Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Keith Kidd, Jerry King, Milburn Chaney, James Ray Coffey, Tom Sheram, Steve Moore, Scotty Thomas, and James Quattlebaum. Named as Honorary Pallbearers are Mike’s 2022 football officiating crew and the Tyler TASO football chapter.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mike’s name to the TVCC Foundation Board to fund a scholarship for future students.
